Trapping | California ground squirrel

Return to California ground squirrel menu
Both live and kill trapping are practical for controlling low to moderate numbers of California ground squirrels. Consider alternative methods for controlling larger populations.

Trapping Resources:
  • Kill Trapping
  • Live Trapping
  • Euthanasia

California ground squirrels are considered nongame mammals under the California Fish and Game Code. A license is not required to trap California ground squirrels unless it is done for profit or hire.

A wildlife management professional can be hired to perform trapping and euthanasia if you are uncomfortable with or unable to conduct these activities. Professional wildlife control operators must possess a license from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Trapping for CA ground squirrel is generally effective mid-Jan to mid-Oct
